The Rock of Salvation

Anchor Scripture for July 10

“David sang this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul.

He sang: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.”

2 Samuel 22:1-3 NLT

Our Rock

Knowing God’s many names and functions can be very helpful in bridging our understanding of who He is and who he isn’t. It can also be key to building our faith, encouraging ourselves, and growing in our relationship with Him. When seeking God about the focus for the month of July, the word that came to mind was “Rock”. I immediately began to look into scriptures that highlighted God/Jesus as our rock or stone symbolically as a starting point and that’s where I found myself heavily in 2 Samuel 22 and 1 Peter 2.

In the month of July, I believe that God is inviting us to grow in our relationship with him through our understanding of him as our rock and to find confidence, joy and peace in that revelation this season. When I think of the characteristics of a rock, I think solid, secure, reliable, and they outlast all types of terrain.

“Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.” - Psalm 95:1

Christ The Chief Cornerstone and Us

In the New Testament, we see how Jesus (God in the flesh) is highlighted as the “Chief Cornerstone”, again using that symbolic language to really signify his importance and pivotal position. We as members of the body of Christ are referred to as “living stones” that also are included in God’s plan and purpose.

1 Peter 2:4-6 NLT

You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor. And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”

Ephesians 2:19-22 NLT

19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. 20 Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. 21 We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.

Assignment

Today, and throughout the month of July, meditate on 2 Samuel 22.

Titled “David’s Song of Praise” in the NLT, this chapter is where some of the most popular and powerful Psalms come from. David had this powerful revelation of God that consistently showed in his confidence and relationship with God. Even when he messed up, he knew how to go back to God because God was truly his rock, his protection.

Today, take in how God is truly trustworthy, faithful, just, powerful, and sovereign. Let it minister to you and note scriptures that really stand out.
